Optimism for kids, by Chisel Hedgehog

In the books of Chisel Hedgehog Crazy Great Summer, Chisel Hedgehog is running for his life to escape from the Mean Mink brothers, the Flying Squirrels, and many others. To keep himself going, despite his many troubles, challenges, and trials, Chisel must rely on his optimistic heart and positive songs to avoid despair. Chisel calls it, OPTIMISTICS.

See below for some of Chisel's, and other characters from the books, quotes that kept them always hoping for a better day ahead:

*** "No matter what happens, as bad as it may be, the sun is still shining, the grass is still growing, the waves are still breaking, and the sky is still blue."

*** "The riches of life are the treasures within. They're the friendships in your heart, the goodness of your soul, the knowledge in your mind. They're not the gold in a stream, or how new your bike is."

*** "Through our lives we build many things with hammers and nails, but during that time we are also building ourselves. We're all carpenters building our own selves. Keep working, and yours will be a mansion."

*** "We all have greatness inside-just break away the shell!"

*** "A bridge built too quickly, will not endure the hardest strain. Your rewards will never be as meaningful without the journey it's an important step."

*** "For it's how you look, what you see. If you look at the world through new eyes, you'll know what we mean. What was brown now is green, and the green changed significantly. Maybe bows, in the sky, are really just shades of black and white, just colored with different eyes!"

*** "What a great day. I have the sun, I have the sky, I have the clouds and the wind . . . and they are as much mine as anyone else's! The simple things in life talk to my heart and make it sing. Life is good!"

*** "Oh what a night, an incredible night, an incredible igloo night. Look at the wonders, like the grass in the wind, like the sun setting in the sky. Shadows, like paintings, from the trees in the night, or the moon like a bulb in the sky."

*** "Well, how can't you smile on a day like this, with the sun shining down and the grass loving it? Pine trees pointin' at the clouds overhead, with the clear blue sky and the birds lovin' it."

*** "Sometimes you have to do things you don't really want to. Not that I want to, but I gotta got to!"

*** "The harder things are, the harder I work, and pretty soon I'm way past the hard things."

*** "I've done a lot of things halfway, but then I'm just halfway there. From now on I will work until I make it all the way."

*** "Here's the secret. Set your mind to it. Work real hard. Never quit trying. That's how you do it!"

*** "When knocked to the ground by things that are hard, I will stand up. When told not to try for I won't succeed, I will walk. When told to slow down before I do fall, I will run. When told to stop for the journey's too long, I will march on…and I will succeed. When told I can, I will listen. When told I can't, I will forget…and I will succeed. I will stand, I will walk, I will run, I will march on, 'till my quest is done."

*** "Can't feel bad if I try and fail only feel bad if I don't try at all."

*** "I look at the moon looking down at me, and smile at the twinkling stars I see, I feel the breeze as it cools my cheeks, and I thank heaven for the apple trees."

*** "Who are you inside, Chisel? That's what's important. Are you strong enough to smile when you feel like frowning? Strong enough to help when you feel like sitting? Strong enough to forgive?"

*** "Add never-ending charity and this earth actually would be heaven. It's not always easy, but you have to catch the chance when it floats by."

*** "Once again in a big bad place, and once again I'm scared. Once again I find myself in a big uncertain world. I don't know if deep inside I have the strength to take it. Once again I look within and see what I am made of."

*** "Sometime you have to just live moment to moment one day at a time, enjoying whatever you can grab hold of, and working slowly on your worries along the way."

*** "Sometimes you have to face your fears to find out there's no reason for any!"

*** "Well go ahead! You'll never make new friends if you don't say hello."

*** "HELLO, TREES. Hello, clouds! And a wonderful good morning to you! And hello to you, wind you feel coooool and fine!"

*** "Even if our friends can't go everywhere with us, our friendships can, and I'm holding yours inside."

*** "Never lose hope. It might wander off at times but you can find it sometimes it turns up in unexpected places. Keep thinking you can, and working hard, and luck grows like a weed and in this case weeds are good."

*** "Nothing is easy, plenty is hard, a brand new city, is not easily started. We can do it! Just think you can, and put your mind to it."

*** "Hope is free, and hope is mine. Today I grab it, and will not let go! And if anyone has lost it, come see me. I have plenty you can borrow."

*** "When the rain clouds are stormin' and the sun is a scorchin' when somebody says they don't like my face, I look at all the grass around, I hear the birds making sounds, I look at trees that seem to smile at me. I grab the corners of my mouth and pull them up toward my ears until they finally stay there all by themselves. And then the world's not so bad and I feel luck comin' back and life is wonderful all over again."

*** "Life is fraught with challenges, disappointments, and mistakes. We all make them and have to accept them and move our feet until we pass them-and not turn back."

*** "I know though that I must walk toward the future and let go of the past. I must hold onto my great memories, explore the future for new ones, and enjoy today. I must treat my life as an expedition and die having sailed all the seas ahead of me. I must smile as the sun rises each new day and ask myself at the end of it if I made a difference in someone's life, if even just my own. I must go on."

*** "Well, I've made mistakes in life, but this I can say I always try to do what is right when I stumble along my way. And I'm sorry for my faults, and I'm sorry for the things I've done but I'm thankful for all of the way I've come. And I've fought the battles, and I've fought the war, and I'll keep trying just one time more. And when I fall down, well, I will always get up, until I am told, you're forgiven son. And I'm looking for the hidden sun 'cause after the rain I know the sunshine comes. You just gotta wait and stand up straight and then pretty soon all the clouds have gone."

*** "I can if I think I can, total concentration is the key."

*** "The best view is not until the top of the mountain. It's hard getting there, but you must fight on!"

*** "Work hard when you work, play hard when you play, and life will go your way."

*** "This is to all the people who have a pounding dream. This is to all the people with never-dying needs. This is to all the people who work like rabid dogs, through sweat and pain, goals to attain, they never stop. Keep right, don't change your course now. Set your sights, aim in at your goal. Hold tight, don't ever let go. Steer high, don't look at the ground. Always try, never say I can't. By and by you'll make it somehow. The peaks of mountains are never reached by easy steps. The valleys down below require no test. And those with hope do know that they can never rest. They just fight on, till the battle's won, Victorious. Don't look back. Don't think if. Just think when."

*** "The past is all around you-floating in the air-see what's not seen, hear what's not heard, reach out and grab it. Maybe we create our own realities. Maybe we ourselves create our own successes, but only after looking."

*** "Now you've got it! Remember your song? It's how you look, what you see! Never think anything is impossible. Inhale deeply, and feel all possibilities entering your soul, and realize you can do anything."

From the author, Perry Crompton, "If you're a dream-chaser you will probably be doubted until the day you succeed. If you are told you won't be successful, if you are told you will fail--ignore it. If you really want something, and are willing to dedicate the time and effort--you will succeed. It may take you years, or even decades. You may have to attend classes, or read books to learn how--and you will definitely have to practice. You may have to redo something ten or a hundred times, but you will succeed. You will probably be your only believer, and the road will get intensely lonely--but march on. Enjoy the challenge, which is the journey--and eventually enjoy the fruit, which the journey leads to. I'm rooting for you. I know you can!"

CD Song Tracks

Instead of singing in the shower like many of the rest of us, Chisel often finds himself singing while walking on his many adventures, and he is usually joined by those animals and things around him. The sounds of the book come to life on the CD between each song, whether it be words from the characters, the sound of the ocean, owls in the night, crickets in the forest, or even the clouds whispering advice. As you read the book, listen to the CD, and the stories come to life! Or listen to the CD by itself for a funfilled journey. Come join me, and Chisel too, in Chisel's adventures inside his world. See you there!

      *****
Yeah home is where
You pop that popcorn
Lay on the couch
With a good ole movie on
Check the fridge
In the middle of the night
When your tummy says
"gimme some food"
      *****
Yeah, free as a bird
They watched them fly
As they soared and they dove in the
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful sky
Yeah beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, sky-
      *****
Into the blue
Wandering sky
Whispering secrets
When I pass by
      *****
Yo do lo ol le he
Yo do lo ol le he
Yo do lo ol le he ho!
Yo do lo ol le he ho!
Yo do lo ol le he ho!
      *****
Look at the wonders
Like the grass in the wind
Like the sun
Setting in the sky
Shadows, like paintings
From the trees in the night
Or the moon
Like a bulb in the sky
      *****
Chased by a bear
And the bear is here
And we're tired of crawling
JUST EAT US BEAR!
      *****
I look at the moon
Looking down at me
And smile at the twinkling
Stars I see
I feel the breeze
As it cools my cheeks
And I thank heaven
For the apple trees

And the sun shines
Down on them
And they drink from the streams
That the clouds have sent
And I thank heaven
For the apple trees
      *****
If you look
At the world
From the place
Where we look at it now

You will see
Differently
You will see
Things aren't what you thought

Come with us
Take a ride
See the world
Through a whole different light-
From a whole different view-

For it's howwwwwwwwwww
How you look
What you see
Yeah it's howwwwwwwwww
How you look
What you see
Come with me
      *****
Listen to the breeze
Talk to the trees
Ask Mr. Summer
What he has in store

Wave to the night
Sing to the moon
Wonder if tomorrow
Brings a friend or two

Yeah, laugh with the clouds
Dance with the wind
Close your eyes and glide
Through your mind's blue sky
      *****
Built a boat
And we know how to sail it
Built the best ship
On the seas

Now we'll sail
Off into the sunset
Set a course
For the open sea
      *****
Well how can't you smile
On a day like this
With the sun shining down
And the grass loving it

Pine trees pointin'
At the clouds overhead
With the clear blue sky
And the birds lovin' it

Yeah, how can't you smile
I just can't say
It's a beautiful world
It's a beautiful day!
      *****
And I am on another adventure
To spy on the moon rising up in the sky
And I'll salute the sun in the morning
And say Hello to the clouds up high
      *****
I don't sing good
But it's what I like to do
And my toes like the sound
And the beat of the music

And I don't always rhyme
But it's what I like to do
So I sing out loud
To the trees that enjoy it
      *****
Once again
In a big bad place
And once again
I'm scared

Once again
I find myself
In a big
Uncertain world

Yeah once again
I just don't know
If I can
Really make it

I don't know
If deep inside
I have the strength
To take it

Once again
I look within
And see what
I am made of
      *****
Well look at the unicorn
Look at the houses
Look at the things
That I have found

Look back in time
To all that has happened
Now the history
Speaks out loud

The years are whispering
To my soul
They're telling of
The times untold

The stories of
Who lived before
Are flowing from
Each page's door
      *****
Well I've made mistakes in life
But this I can say
I always try
To do what is right
When I stumble along my way

And I'm sorry for my faults
And I'm sorry for
The things I've done
But I'm thankful for
All of the way I've come

And I've fought the battles
And I've fought the war
And I'll keep trying
Just one time more
And when I fall down
Well I will always get up
Until I am told
Well you're forgiven son

And I'm looking for
The hidden sun
Cause after the rain
I know the sunshine comes
You just gotta wait
And stand up straight
And then pretty soon
All the clouds have gone
      *****
All alone in a cave like this
And I can feel the loneliness....

Where's that sun
And where's that sky
That make me smile
As the day goes by

Where's my friends
In the cold dark night
When the stars don't shine
And there is no light

Yeah, where am I and
Where have I been and
Where am I going
And where's the end

Where's there a hand
That I can hold
That lights the fire
Down inside my soul...
      *****
And when the rain clouds are stormin'
And the sun is a scorchin'
When somebody says they don't like my face

I look at all the grass around
I hear the birds making sounds
I look at trees that seem to smile at me

I grab the corners of my mouth
And pull them up towards my ears
Until they finally stay there all by themselves

And then the world's not so bad
And I feel luck comin' back
And life is wonderful all over again
      *****
This is to all the people
Who never thought they could
This is to all the people
Who never thought they would
This is to all the people
Who don't have faith enough
They don't trust
Just quite enough
They don't know

This is to all the people
Who have a pounding dream
This is to all the people
With never dying needs
This is to all the people
Who work like rabid dogs
Through sweat and pain
Goals to attain
They never stop

Keep right
Don't change your course now
Set your sights
Aim in at your goal
Hold tight
Don't ever let go

Steer high
Don't look at the ground
Always try
Never say I can't
By and by
You'll make it somehow

The peaks of mountains
Are never reached by easy steps
The valleys down below
Require no test
And those with hope
Do know that they can never rest
They just fight on
Till the battle's won
Victorious

In olden days
The deathly seas were hard to cross
But people sailed in boats for weeks
Willing to risk the loss
They knew that if they doubted
Then they would never start
So look ahead
Into the wind
Follow your heart
      *****
Never is easy to do
Ain't somethin' I look forward to
Often brings a tear to a good man's eye
Always is hard when the time comes by

Remember all the things that we have done
Always have them to ponder on
Funny how the time is finally gone
Hard to say the words but the time has come

Well, Gotta say good bye now
Cause I know you have to run
Gotta think of the times
That we did have

Gotta fight back
When the tears almost come
Gotta hold my head
Up in the air

Yeah, gotta smile
And think of things you've said
Gotta say good friend,
Good-bye to you

Never lived a year when I didn't see
The flowers not bloom, or the seasons change
Only one thing that I know for sure
Everything will change a little more...

...Can't stop the smoke rising in the air
Can't stop the snow falling everywhere
The world keeps turning, have to turn with it
And we should always remember this

Home.
